From the introduction:
Travelling to the palace, you are given audience with the King.
The King speaks to you:
"We have need of a fresh young person whom we can trust. The lives of all in the kingdom may well rest in your able hands.
"The evil Mondamen, an evil deposed king from the south has been amassing an army with which to attack our kingdom.
"This would be bad enough, but now he has acquired the services of an evil wizard.
"The wizard is going to attempt to call forth the evil 'Vaprak'. If he succeeds, his forces will be almost unstoppable.
"Vaprak is an evil demigod worshipped by ogres and trolls. By getting his help, Mondamen will have all the trolls and ogres in the land on his side.
"But Mondamen is leaving nothing to chance. To be doubly sure of his success, the evil lord has captured the only daughter of King Kahn of Nexdor (a neighboring kingdom). Mondamen is now blackmailing Kahn into financing and aiding him.
"We need a brave warrior to enter his stronghold, kill the evil wizard before he can call up the demon Vaprak, and to bring back the daughter of Kahn.
"Also, if the evil wizard succeeds in calling forth his demon, you will have to find a magic spell that will return the demon to his own plane.
"But, this is a volunteer mission. If you choose not to go, we can find someone else.
"Of course, we will have to execute you for treason, but it is your choice.
The King sends two of his best warriors to go with you. They will meet you at the entrance of the caves that serve as Mondamen's base.
"Oh, and by the way, I'm having the Royal Wizard throw an invisible wall around the mountain to prevent you from, shall we say, 'getting lost'.
"Good luck, suck... uh, Sam."
Nelson, commenting on a Facebook post by the EAG in November 2013, mentions that many years ago he wrote a version of The Caves of Mondamen for the SwordThrust system, co-authoring it with Peter Wityk. He notes that Donald Brown felt the adventure was too similar to Nelson's original Mondamen and that he never got around to reworking it; however, Nelson says he still retains the original source code.
