John Nelson is the author of 22 Eamon adventures, more than any other author, and was the founder the National Eamon User's Club and editor of the Eamon Adventurer's Log newsletter. Nelson, with Jon Heng and Bob Davis, created Eamon II, an expanded variant of the base system; he also created a second, more elaborate variant called Knight Quest, as well as a PC port of the standard Eamon master called Eamon-PC.

Trivia
- Nelson wrote the adventure Caves of Hollow Mountain intending to credit it to a pseudonym ,"John Roberts", but later chose to use his real name. The pen name remains in the adventure's lead-in program.
- When Frank Black converted Nelson's Knight Quest adventure Amateur Alley into an Eamon adventure, he changed the setting to be a small town named "Nell-Zon" in reference to John.
- Nelson included a doodle of himself wearing a Viking helmet in the Club News section of the August 1985 newsletter:
