The Forbidden City is an Eamon adventure written by Robert Parker.
Background
This is Robert Parker's final published adventure, announced and reviewed in the September 1995 issue of the club newsletter. Tom Zuchowski noted that Parker originally wrote the adventure with the intention of submitting it to Softdisk but ultimately decided against it, and when he moved on from the Apple II to a PC the adventure languished. With Parker's permission, Zuchowski corrected a few minor problems and released it as a standard Eamon adventure.
Premise
Commander Dirk, leader of the town militia, seeks your help with an urgent mission: to save the life of the King who now lies near death, poisoned by the villain known as the "King of Assassins". You must recover the antidote from the assassin's lair in a foreboding place known as the Forbidden City.

Prelude Silently, he slid the window open. He cautiously looked inside, and seeing no one, he entered. No one, that is, except for a man sleeping in a plush bed. Slowly and silently, he pulled the dagger from its sheath. Light from the moon reflected off of the blade; off of the liquid on the blade: poison! * * * I What a night, you think. You curse yourself for staying at the Golden Dragon for so long, but Malrik, the Bartender, needed some help moving some crates. At least you got a couple bottles of wine for your troubles. "Hold, Sir!" You spin about, hand going for your weapon by reflex. "Damn!" you think. Of all the time to get caught in an alley. You grow nervous as you see nine men approaching. You breathe a sigh of relief when you recognize them as members of the town militia. One of them, obviously their commander, approaches you. The others remain a comfortable distance away. "I am Lieutenant Gerard. I do not have time to explain. Please come with me." He grabs your arm and begins to pull you along. Both bottles of wine fall to the ground with resounding crashes. Oh well, they were both probably bad anyway you think to yourself. II "Please have a seat." You look at the large, bull-ish man sitting behind the desk. He is busily searching through stacks of paper on his desk. You sit in the chair in front ofhis desk. "How well did you know the man with one arm?" "Lieutenant Gerard, this is not about your 'one-armed' man. So please leave us, now!" bellows the man. The Lieutenant does a smart salute, then a 180-degree turn towards the door. You hear him mutter something about going to catch someone. "Please excuse the Lieutenant. A few months ago, a prisoner in his custody, a man with one arm, escaped, and it's been driving him crazy since, Now, on to business. Please, if you will, follow me." As he rises from his desk, he must have hit a button, because a panel in the wall slides back, revealing a darkened corridor. "By the way, my name is Commander Dirk." III Commander Dirk leads you to a small room. In it is a bed in which the King of Eamon lies. His skin looks real pale, and you hear him wheezing as he breathes. "The King has been poisoned," says Commander Dirk, "by none other than that fiend himself, the 'King of Assassins.' We have tracked him down, and we need you to get him. We chose you because you are the best there is." "I'll do it." you reply. "No time to get my other equipment, so I'll take what I have on me. How long do I have?" "Not very long. The King shall die very soon if the antidote is not found." "Well where is it?" you ask. "In 'The Forbidden City,'" replies Dirk. "Uh..." you start to say. "Too late," replies Dirk, as you feel the forces of a Teleport spell hit you. |
