You've enjoyed a successful hunting trip with your friend Nolan in the forests north of Evenhold, but when you stop in the town of Geldhaven to prepare your venison for the journey home you overhear the townsfolk talking about some mysterious disappearances at a nearby inn. You meet with the town council who explain that some artisans had recently been sent to refurbish the dilapidated establishment but never returned, unnerving the townsfolk and deepening the inn's already ominous reputation. The council implores you to investigate and discover what happened to the workers, and intrigued by the mystery you agree.

Full introduction

You and your friend Nolan Rogier have been planning a hunting trip for months and are finally on your way. The excitement of the adventure is palpable as you make your way through the dense forest, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of nature. The rustling of leaves in the wind and the harmonious chirping of birds create a serene atmosphere that fills you with peace. With game bags filled to the brim and the thrill of the hunt still fresh in your mind, you can't help but feel a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

Upon arriving in the hamlet of Geldhaven, where you stop to prepare your venison, a small group of friendly locals greet you and show you to the town's storage facilities. As you prepare for the journey home, you overhear the chatter among the townsfolk. They are all talking about the mysterious disappearance of some artisans sent to renovate the Wayfarers Inn, an old establishment in the forest on the outskirts of town. This news piques your curiosity, and you can't shake off the feeling that you can do something to help.

You request a meeting with the town council to get further details; it takes some effort, but you finally get an audience. They tell you that a foreign investors syndicate recently purchased the Wayfarers Inn, which has an evil reputation. Whispers of inexplicable occurrences have plagued the inn for decades, making it an ominous place in the eyes of the townspeople. Despite this, they sent in a team of artisans to renovate it.

However, the artisans have gone missing, and the town is panicked. The town council expresses concern that the investment may be in jeopardy and notes that the Geldhaven tax authority is interested in discovering the identity of the inn's prior owners. This information was lost to a flood some years ago, and the back taxes accrued have become substantial.

The council begs you to help find the missing artisans (or retrieve their remains for proper burial) and solve the mysteries surrounding the Wayfarers Inn. Despite the eerie tales about the place, you are determined to uncover the truth and help the town resolve this crisis. You agree, and they offer to store your food for free while you are on your adventure. It is a kind gesture, and you appreciate the council's support in your quest.

As you set off, you feel a sense of purpose. There are mysteries to solve and missing people to find. With your skills honed through years of wilderness survival training and a keen eye for details, you are confident you will uncover the truth and end the town's worries. You are determined to unravel the enigma that is the Wayfarers Inn.

The Wayfarers Inn is situated just outside the village of Geldhaven in the Davelmar Forest, a location previously described in Penner's The Vile Grimoire of Jaldi'al (2020).
