Expedition to the Darkwoods is an Eamon adventure written by Greg Gioia and released in June 1989.

Background

EAG president Tom Zuchowski wrote in his review that this adventure was created as part of the NEUC's 1985 adventure design contest but didn't think it had been submitted in time to be considered.

Expedition to the Darkwoods was the last of Gioia's three adventures to be released.

Premise

Drawn by a newspaper ad seeking two additional members for a mysterious expedition, you arrive at the Main Hall to find a large crowd of prospective candidates, including your longtime rival Hector. You and Hector are both selected and along with the three other members (a wizard, a fighter, and a thief) make the nine-day journey to the Province of Baronia where the purpose of your mission will be revealed.

Upon your arrival, the leader of Baronia explains that some evil force residing in a nearby forest known as the Darkwoods has been attacking townsfolk and abducting children. Your job is to enter the Darkwoods, free the captives, and put an end to the menace.

Full introduction

You were happily enjoying a mug of frosty gut-rot in a local tavern when you spied a newspaper on the barstool next to you. As you thumbed through it you noticed a want-ad that caught your eye. It read:

Expedition forming
Two more people are
needed—Apply at the
Adventurer's Guild.

Your curiosity piqued, you hurriedly gulped your drink and paid your tab. You then set out for the Adventurer's Guild. Once there, you joined a large mob of enthusiastic adventurers.

As you prepared to leave in disgust, you noticed one adventurer in particular in the crowd — Hector. He is your greatest rival here at the Main Hall. You see this as an opportunity to prove yourself as good as him by being picked.

Sure enough, Hector was chosen. But were you? We'll see how you fared on the tests!

You were selected!

...

You and Hector join three others. One of the three, an old and wizened wizard, explains the purpose of the expedition — to head to the Darkwoods. Once there, the rest of the mission will be explained by the Burgomaster of Baronia, a province there.

After a nine-day journey your party reached Baronia. It stands about one mile away from the edge of the Darkwoods, a massive forest famed for its mystery and danger. "If that is where we're going," you think as you wait for the Burgomaster, "this will be some journey indeed."

Presently, the Burgomaster arrived. One look at him showed told you how desperate he was. He then began his speech.

"Several of the town's children, seven to be exact, were abducted by marauders from the Darkwoods last night," he began. "Those attacks were only the most recent in a series of many and different evil-doings that have been going on for about two months. All of our best adventurers have been slaughtered within moments after they disappeared into the Darkwoods. We know this because we heard horrible screams and seconds later their mutilated bodies were flung from the forest. That's why we called you!"

"Nice guy" you mumble, but you stop when the wizard, Elbidahs by name, gives you a harsh look.

"You will be equipped and sent in two days. Until then you will be given top accommodations at the city hall." With that, the meeting ended.

The next two days were spent in your room planning and preparing to journey into the unknown.

It is now dawn of the third day, and you are at the entrance to the Blackwoods! Prepare now for the most difficult journey you shall ever take!
