Revenge of the Bookworm is an Eamon adventure written by Robert Parker and released in June 1990.

Background

This is the second of three adventures in Parker's Bookworm series. It follows Encounter: The Bookworm (released just three months earlier in March 1990) and is followed by Bookworm 3-D (1994).

Premise

An assistant is tidying the laboratory of the wizard Hokas Tokas when he spots an aquarium with a worm inside. He removes the lid to give the worm some fresh air and in a flash of blue light it escapes. Freed from his imprisonment, the Bookworm writes you a letter vowing to kill you the next time you meet, and including a map to guide you to his hideout. You tell Hokas the situation and that the map leads to Des Moines, Iowa; Hokas gravely tells you be careful.

Full introduction

"And when you're through cleaning those test tubes, feed the animals."

"Yes Mister Tokas, sir. I'm almost done with them, sir," replied the young lab assistant.

He glances at Hokas as he exits, then returns thought to what he is doing.

"Clean this, clean that, feed the animals. When am I ever going to get the chance to do something myself?"

He puts the test tube back on the rack and walks to the other end of the room. He looks at the various animals in cages and aquariums. One aquarium in particular catches his eye.

"Why hello there little worm. What is Hokas using you for? Checking for poison apples, perhaps? Let me remove this top so you can get some fresh air in there. Hokas can be such a mean man to little animals at times. That brute."

He unlatches the cover. A blue light fills the room.

"No! No! Nooooooo!"

* * *

You awake with a start. Sweat pours off of you as if you had been caught in a rain storm. Thunder rumbles through a window nearby.

"That must have been what woke me. I could have swore I heard a noise, like someone writing a letter, though," you say to yourself.

Suddenly, an inner intuition tells you to look at your chest. There, clinging to the sweat is a tiny note. It reads:

Brave warrior,

You are the one responsible for my being caged in an aquarium. I shall not be taken alive again. I could have slaughtered you in your sleep, but chose not to. I want you to know how close to death you came. The next time we meet, I shall kill you!

With love, The Bookworm

You jump out of bed and throw on your armor and weapons. With the Bookworm on the loose, you have no time to take a hot bath. You leave to find Hokas.

* * *

"So that's what happened," you say. You sit in awe and amazement as Hokas tells you about the crummy help he has been hiring lately due to the Humanoid Equal Employment Directive recently passed. "At least it was only one of those orcs from Nostrum. How is that humanoid strike going there anyway?"

"The last I heard, there was rioting. An adventurer I know by the name of Iron Mike is in that area, and he lets me know every now and then what's going on. Anyway, back to the Bookworm. I have no idea where he is this time. We're going to have to do a search again, and that takes time."

"No need, Hokas. He left me a map," you reply.

"He what?!"

"Yeah. Apparently he wants me to come for him."

"And where be his hideout this time?"

"Des Moines, Iowa."

"My lad," says Hokas, "you be damned careful..."

Notice!: While Revenge of the Bookworm can be played in its entirety by itself, I recommend that you have first played Encounter: The Bookworm. Some of what happens in this game makes references to that adventure. Thank you — Robert Parker.
