Encounter: The Bookworm is an Eamon adventure written by Robert Parker and released in March 1990.

Background

This is the first of three adventures by Parker that feature the recurring villain known as the Bookworm; it was followed by Revenge of the Bookworm (1990) and Bookworm 3-D (1994).

Premise

The wizard Hokas Tokas takes you to the local library where all the books have been drained of their contents, leaving only blank pages with a round hole through the middle. Hokas tells you it's the work of a being known as the Bookworm and asks for your help in stopping him before he can ransack any more libraries. You agree and after days' of searching locate the Bookworm's hideout, which Hokas warns you is full of "hints" and "clues".

Full introduction

One fine day while relaxing at the bar, Hokas Tokas approaches you.

"We need your help." He says. "Will you aid us?"

"Before I answer," you say, "might I ask what the problem is?"

"Of course. If you will follow me."

You leave the bar following Hokas. He takes you down a couple side streets and comes to a stop in front of the Eamon Public Library. He begins to mount the steps, so you follow him. An armed guard standing near the door sees you and begins to walk toward you.

"He's with me," Hokas says to the guard, who then moves out of your way.

You catch the guard giving you a nervous look.

Inside the library, you see books thrown about, as if vandals had broken in and ransacked the place. Picking up one of the books, you see a three inch hole through the center of it. Opening it up, you discover that all of the pages are now completely blank.

"This is the fifth library to have this happen to it." Hokas says. "We have to stop this madman before more books are destroyed. Luckily, these books are easy to replace. However, if this had been a library of rare manuscripts..."

Hokas begins to shiver as though a wicked thought crossed his mind.

"I'll do it." You say. "But tell me, who did this?"

"The Bookworm," Hokas hisses through clenched teeth.

(...Many days later...)

"I have located where he is holding out, Hokas, and I'm on my way there now."

"I shall never be able to thank you enough if you defeat him. I have found out a bit about him for you. He plays an odd sort of savoir-faire. His hideout, I am told, has many 'clues' or 'hints' built into it. I do not know any more, so pay close attention to anything and everything."

"Remember. A mind is a terrible thing to waste."

Acknowledgements

In his "THANKS TO" file, Parker acknowledges others' help:

Tom Zuchowski, for guiding me along with help, hints, and other stuff.
Nathan Segerlind, for the same, plus for having an imagination and mind as sick as mine!
Sam Ruby, for replying to my letter and for making a guest appearance in this adventure.
Kiss, Black Sabbath, Anthrax, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, and countless other groups whose music kept my adrenaline going.
H. P. Lovecraft for being able to do what no other writer could do: scare me.

Parker also thanks everyone who played his adventure with a special animation (a reference to the end of Monty Python's 1982 Hollywood Bowl show).
