Wiki:AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a powerful tool that in many ways and places is changing how content is made. This page describes the Eamon Wiki's position on the use of AI and machine-generated content.
Background
Even though it exists almost entirely as computer code, the Eamon game series has always been a wonderfully human endeavor. A big part of the game's success and longevity is the fact that it gives people the tools to build original adventures from their imagination. Anyone with a fun new idea and just the barest coding ability (or even no coding ability at all) can create brand new stories for others to enjoy. Each adventure is a little peek into someone else's imagination, revealing their unique vision of Brown's world of Eamon and their own individual tastes and styles.
The community that's grown up around Eamon over the years is also very human-centered. People create the works, people share them and review them, and people build the various clubs and newsletters and websites that support the process. Human effort and human dedication is the reason Eamon is still living, growing, and flourishing nearly half a century after its creation.
Having tools to make all of this easier is fine. Automating dull or repetitive chores gives us more time for the things we enjoy most: having fun, being creative, and exercising our imaginations. However, when automation creeps into the human realms of creation and imagination, something important slips away from us. When we see an article, a review, or a piece of art that's been shaped by AI, we can no longer trust that what we're getting actually is a glimpse into another human's mind. Losing that can diminish the enjoyment and sense of connection that we'd normally get from the content.
Policy
Currently all article content in the Eamon Wiki is human-generated. It is the policy of Eamon Wiki that it remain so, and that articles will never consist of content created by AI or any similar automated means. This applies both to written article content and to the media used in articles.
Exceptions and acceptable uses
- Some Eamon Wiki articles previously made use of AI-generated artwork to illustrate the article's subject. These pieces have since been removed from the articles, but the images themselves still exist within their directory for historical purposes. These images may not be used in articles.
- Some projects outside the wiki do make use of AI. Eamon Returns, for example, is an AI-based version of the game that uses ChatGPT to generate all the plot, text, and images for adventures, and the wiki article gives examples of this. It's fine to include pieces of machine-generated content from other projects as a means of illustrating those projects.
- Using AI for purposes other than generating article content is fine. For example, administrators sometimes use AI to analyze things like Mediawiki system logs to diagnose problems and improve the wiki's performance.
